Originally a market crossroads on the way to Ujazdów Castle, it became a focal point of Jewish life and commerce by the 19th century, known for its ironwork shops and neoclassical architecture. The square bears significant scars from World War II; it was incorporated into the Warsaw Ghetto in 1940, with walls separating it from the rest of the city until the ghetto's liquidation. While much of the original fabric was destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising, key landmarks remain or have been reimagined, including the restored All Saints Church and the modernist Jewish Theatre. A 2011 renovation revitalized the space, preserving traces of old tram tracks alongside contemporary landscaping and the towering Cosmopolitan skyscraper nearby.
