This is Þingvellir National Park, a rare site where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge rises above sea level. The dramatic cliff seen is the Almannagjá Fault, marking the edge of the North American tectonic plate. Opposite this wall lies the Eurasian plate; the snowy valley between them is a sinking rift (graben) created as the plates pull apart by approximately 2 cm annually. Formed from layered basaltic lava, this landscape is geologically alive and culturally historic, serving as the site of Iceland’s first parliament due to the cliff’s natural acoustics.
