The Genseki-yama Quarry Site in Mikasa City is a former quarry excavated to obtain materials for the construction of the Shin-Katsurazawa Dam embankment, and is a place where visitors can observe the “Mikasa Formation,” geological layers deposited on the seafloor approximately 100 million years ago. At Genseki-yama, massive exposed rock layers created during dam construction allow visitors to closely observe geological formations that originated in an ancient sea. Today, Genseki-yama is a special geosite that can only be visited by participants who apply for guided geopark tours organized by Mikasa City.
