The Battle of Ganryūjima (1612) was a legendary duel between two of Japan's greatest swordsmen: Miyamoto Musashi vs. Sasaki Kojirō on a small island in western Japan (now called Ganryū Island). Kojirō was famous for his long nodachi sword and a technique called "the Swallow Cut." Musashi arrived deliberately late, carving a wooden sword from his boat's oar on the way. Kojirō, furious at being kept waiting, threw away his scabbard — to which Musashi remarked, "A man who throws away his scabbard has already lost." Musashi struck first, delivering a fatal blow to Kojirō's head, and walked away victorious. The duel became one of the most iconic moments in samurai history, immortalized in novels, films, and manga — most famously in Eiji Yoshikawa's novel *Musashi*.
