Sólheimajökull Proglacial Lagoon and Icebergs
19 visitas0 Likes
The lake at the base of Sólheimajökull, known as a proglacial lagoon, formed as the glacier retreated over the last few decades. It is surprisingly deep, filled with silty meltwater and massive icebergs that calve off the glacier’s snout.
These icebergs often appear black or striped due to layers of tephra (volcanic ash). The lagoon is constantly changing as these bergs flip, melt, or drift toward the river outlet.
