  3. Garðar Cliff at Reynisdrangar

39回訪問These striking "organ pipe" structures are a textbook example of columnar basalt. This geometric phenomenon occurs when a thick layer of lava cools very slowly. As the molten rock solidifies, it contracts and cracks in a highly organized pattern—typically forming hexagonal or pentagonal columns. The cooling process starts from the outside in; the cracks propagate downward, creating the perfectly vertical pillars seen at the Garðar cliff. These columns are so symmetrical they often appear hand-carved, but they are entirely the result of thermal physics and volcanic history.

  5. Thingvellir National Park

38回訪問This is Þingvellir National Park, a rare site where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge rises above sea level. The dramatic cliff seen is the Almannagjá Fault, marking the edge of the North American tectonic plate. Opposite this wall lies the Eurasian plate; the snowy valley between them is a sinking rift (graben) created as the plates pull apart by approximately 2 cm annually. Formed from layered basaltic lava, this landscape is geologically alive and culturally historic, serving as the site of Iceland’s first parliament due to the cliff’s natural acoustics.

  8. Sólheimajökull Glacier

25回訪問Sólheimajökull is an impressive outlet glacier flowing from the massive Mýrdalsjökull ice cap in South Iceland. It is a dramatic landscape defined by "dirty" ice—striations of black volcanic ash from past eruptions, including the infamous Katla, trapped within the blue glacier ice. The glacier is a premier destination for ice climbing and guided hikes, offering a firsthand look at deep crevasses and shimmering ice caves. However, it serves as a stark symbol of climate change; the glacier is receding rapidly, leaving a growing lagoon at its base where massive icebergs frequently break off and float.
  9. Bjarnarfell (Geysir Geothermal Area)

21回訪問Bjarnarfell is a prominent mountain in Southwest Iceland, rising to 724 meters just west of the world-famous Geysir Geothermal Area. Its northern and eastern slopes are geologically significant, consisting of rhyolite and basaltic breccia, which indicate the presence of an extinct central volcano beneath the surface. Because it overlooks the Haukadalur valley, the summit provides a stunning panoramic view of the steaming vents and erupting geysers below. Hikers often use Bjarnarfell for a bird's-eye perspective of the Golden Circle, watching Strokkur spout water from a peaceful, elevated distance.
  10. Reynisdrangar Sea Stacks

21回訪問The Reynisdrangar sea stacks are the dramatic basalt pillars you see rising from the North Atlantic. Reaching heights of up to 66 meters, these geological formations are the eroded remnants of the mountain Reynisfjall. Over centuries, the relentless power of the ocean wore away the softer surrounding rock, leaving only these dense volcanic cores behind. According to local folklore, the stacks were once trolls who were caught by the dawn's light while attempting to pull a three-masted ship to shore, instantly turning into stone. Today, they serve as vital nesting grounds for Atlantic puffins.
  11. Sólheimajökull Proglacial Lagoon and Icebergs

19回訪問The lake at the base of Sólheimajökull, known as a proglacial lagoon, formed as the glacier retreated over the last few decades. It is surprisingly deep, filled with silty meltwater and massive icebergs that calve off the glacier’s snout. These icebergs often appear black or striped due to layers of tephra (volcanic ash). The lagoon is constantly changing as these bergs flip, melt, or drift toward the river outlet.
