The Former Ponbetsu Coal Mine Headframe is a historic coal mining structure located in Mikasa City, Hokkaido, and was once known as the “largest mine shaft tower in the East.”
The Ponbetsu Coal Mine operated from 1900 to 1971, producing approximately 26.5 million tons of coal that supported Japan’s modernization and the development of Hokkaido.
The remaining headframe stands approximately 51 meters tall with an inner diameter of about 6.4 meters, and was considered a state-of-the-art facility at the time, adopting Japan’s first system for efficiently transporting workers, materials, and coal through a single shaft.
Today, the massive steel structure and mining facilities preserve the history of Mikasa’s once-thriving coal mining industry and remain one of the city’s representative industrial heritage sites.
