The Battle of Dan-no-ura (1185) was the decisive naval battle that ended Japan's Genpei War. The Minamoto clan defeated the Taira clan in the Shimonoseki Strait. Minamoto no Yoshitsune, the brilliant commander of the Minamoto forces, famously leaped across enemy ships — a maneuver known as "hassō-tobi" — to avoid capture and strike at the Taira, showcasing his legendary agility in combat. The battle led to the deaths of most Taira leaders and the drowning of the child emperor Antoku. This victory allowed Minamoto no Yoritomo to establish Japan's first samurai government, the Kamakura Shogunate.
