Koli National Park: Finland's Most Iconic Landscape Located in the North Karelia region along the western shore of Lake Pielinen, Koli National Park is home to one of Finland's most celebrated and recognizable national landscapes. The park is renowned for its striking quartzite ridge, which features three closely situated peaks. Historically, these hills were considered sacred places, and their names are rooted in ancient pagan mythology from the time before Finno-Ugric tribes settled the area. The Three Peaks of Koli: Ukko-Koli (347 meters): As the highest peak in the park—and the highest point in southern Finland—Ukko-Koli offers the classic, sweeping view over the island-dotted Lake Pielinen. This specific vantage point has famously inspired countless Finnish artists, painters, and composers for over a century. Akka-Koli (339 meters): Situated just a short walk from Ukko-Koli, this summit provides excellent views directed southward along the Koli ridge and across different sections of the lake. The environment around Akka-Koli is known for its pristine boreal forest and biodiversity. Paha-Koli (334 meters): Translating roughly to "Evil Koli" in old Finnish mythology, this steep and rocky peak completes the trilogy of the major summits. It features dramatic drops and offers panoramic views of the vast Finnish wilderness. Today, the easiest way to experience this scenery is by walking the Huippujen kierros (The Trail of the Tops). This accessible 1.4-kilometer loop trail begins near the Koli Nature Centre Ukko and seamlessly connects all three of these majestic, historically significant summits.
