Sólheimajökull Proglacial Lagoon and Icebergs - Blue and dark-streaked icebergs protrude from a snow-covered, partially frozen lagoon. Snowy rocky hills line the far shore beneath an overcast sky.

Sólheimajökull Proglacial Lagoon and Icebergs

The lake at the base of Sólheimajökull, known as a proglacial lagoon, formed as the glacier retreated over the last few decades. It is surprisingly deep, filled with silty meltwater and massive icebergs that calve off the glacier’s snout. These icebergs often appear black or striped due to layers of tephra (volcanic ash). The lagoon is constantly changing as these bergs flip, melt, or drift toward the river outlet.
