Bradwell Abbey (originally Bradwell Priory) is an ancient Scheduled Monument in Milton Keynes. Founded around 1154, the site is nearly 870 years old and stands as one of the area's key surviving medieval landmarks. Historical Timeline 1154 Foundation: Established as a Benedictine priory on land granted by Meinfelin, Baron of Wolverton. 1340s Pilgrimage: Built a reputation as a pilgrimage site after reports of a weeping statue of St. Mary. The Chapel of St. Mary was constructed to house it. 1349 Black Death: The plague killed Prior William de Loughton and wiped out much of the local community, causing a severe decline. 1524 Dissolution: Dissolved under Cardinal Wolsey over a decade before Henry VIII's main Dissolution of the Monasteries, with its revenues helping endow Christ Church College, Oxford. Standing Architecture Chapel of St. Mary (Grade I Listed): The sole surviving religious structure from the original complex. Inside, it contains rare, nationally important 14th-century wall paintings depicting the Virgin Mary and kneeling pilgrims. Cruck Barn (Grade II Listed): A timber-framed medieval tithe barn dating to around 1350, used to store crop taxes that supported the priory. Earthworks & Ponds: The surrounding grounds retain earthwork footprints of the lost priory church and original medieval fishponds fed by local streams. Present Day Today, the site is home to the Milton Keynes City Discovery Centre (MKCDC), serving as an urban studies hub, educational space, and public heritage site within the Loughton Valley parkland.
